Inbande porcelain

Porcelain ware which has repeated designs is named as inbande in Japanese and it means stamped or impressed. Inbande is normally applied in under glaze blue color by the different printing methods. Earlier inbande method is a stencil method known as surie : the color was applied through the cut design of the stencil paper- katagami which was hand cut and treated with persimmon juice. Other older method is called konnyakuban. Konnyaku is a type of Japanese jelly like food product made of konnyaku potato. Possibly they used a rubber like stamp to repeat the motif or the design. More modern transfer ware method was introduced from the west in the Meiji period.
