             Description of Patterns

choji  丁字.... a clove pattern and one of takara-zukushi. Clove was considered as rare spice 

genjiko  源氏香......originated from a kind of the game naming or identifying scent of incense played in the Heian period 

gobenka 五弁花........a floral mark with five petals usually placed in the center of a plate or a bowl

hoju  宝珠..........also called nyoi-hoju. A round ball with  a corn on the top. It means a wish-come-true jewel.

Icho  銀杏......ginkgo

kacho 花鳥.....................birds and flowers

karakusa  唐草.....karakusa literally means a plant from China. When this is used as the decorative patterns, it refers to the winding ivy patterns of the arabesque

kakuregasa  隠れ笠.........a magic hat to make a person invisible

Kakuremino  隠れ蓑........a magic straw rain cape to make a person invisible

Konchu   昆虫  ............an insect 

makimono   巻物..........a scroll

mijin-karakusa.......smallest of karakusa patterns. "mijin" means a size of a speck or a dust

nejimon 捻文....swirl twisting) pattern

rinpo 輪宝........treasure pattern linked together

sansui  山水........ "mountain  & water " which means a landscape or seascape with buildings, boats, figures, birds, trees and etc..

seigaiha 青海波.......a wave or fish scale pattern

shippo-tsunagi 七宝繫ぎ......link of shippo which is a circular figure combining four ellipses. Shippo means seven treasure.

shochikubai 松竹梅.....It means a pine, a bamboo & a plum. They stands for longevity, prosperity and fertility.

takara-zukushi  宝尽くし....many treasures 

tako-karakusa 蛸唐草......arabesque vine pattern similar to the octopus tentacles

yomodasuki 四方襷......a connected link of diamond shaped squares containing motif within the frames
